“The Field Index,” together with “Old House,” was chosen by the judge Sean Hill as the winner of Terrain’s Thirteenth Annual Poetry Prize. Published in Terrain.org, Spring 2023, The Field Index is an abecedarian that evokes the whole rich life of an abandoned field, the same field that is celebrated in another of my poems, “Verbesina occidentalis.” That life includes humans and other exotic invasive species, as well as the beleaguered but striving natives.
